Lady Libertine (1984)

Lady Libertine is a film adaptation of a Victorian-era book known as "Frenky and I". A baronet named Charles Benson, the younger son of a titled aristocrat who did not inherit his father's title, encounters a beautiful boy named Francis, or Frankie, in the autumn woods while returning from a hunt. They strike up a conversation, and Charles discovers that the boy is an orphan who is heading to a port town to find work as a cabin boy on a ship and seek his fortune in some colony.

Charles, who was around 35 years old and living alone in his estate, feeling lonely, decides to do a good deed and provide an education for the boy, who appears delicate and unsuited for the harsh maritime life he intended to choose. Charles plans to give Frankie a starting capital so that he has something to begin his life with (the baronet had money). He convinces Frankie to accompany him to his estate. There, he takes charge of his education and manners. However, Frankie turns out to be less diligent in his studies and allows himself to engage in various mischievous acts. Frustrated, Charles decides to spank the boy, not because he is a horrible villain, but because corporal punishment was a common part of the upbringing process in England at the time—spankings were as routine and frequent as brushing our teeth is today!

During the spanking, Frankie writhes in pain so intensely that he unintentionally reveals to Charles the absence of something that should definitely be present in a boy but instead, Charles notices something else. Perplexed, Charles immediately stops the punishment and releases the bewildered Frankie. Over the following years, the baronet carefully conceals his knowledge that Frankie is, in fact, a girl, but occasionally resorts to the cane...

It's unsurprising that many of the photos there were dedicated to discipline. At a time when corporal punishment was prevalent both in schools and at home, there were many enthusiasts of sadomasochism. The film itself revolves around this theme. Even the opening credits present themselves against the backdrop of black-and-white photos of discipline. These photos are produced in Johann's studio, apparently by a German who brought this art from Germany. These seemingly innocent and naive snapshots, from our perspective, alter the fates of the main characters in the film. But do they truly alter fate? Does Lisa's passion for discipline lead to the demise of her father, Engineer Radlov? Did these very photos drive Johann to end his life in suicide? No, I am certain that they did not. The issue lies not in the black-and-white cards but in people's puritanical attitudes towards them. It's not the passion for discipline that ruins people's lives, but rather their attitudes towards this passion.
